Deaf Awareness Week

Posted: Wed 05 May 2021

We know that the pandemic has turned most people’s lives upside down but for deaf children and adults the challenges have been even greater.  For our preschool children, many of the online resources we relied on during lockdowns such as audible books, author read stories and sing-a-longs were not accessible to deaf children.

As this is Deaf Awareness week, we wanted to take this opportunity to signpost parents and carers to resources and websites designed to support pre-school children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Deaf Awareness Week aims to promote the positive aspects of deafness, promote social inclusion and raise awareness of the huge range of local organisations that support deaf people and their family and friends.

  • The Education Authority’s Sensory Service is a regional service that supports children who are Hearing Impaired, Vision Impaired or Multi-Sensory Impaired. Within the EA website,  you can access a wide range of resources created by a team of teachers with specialist qualification working with children with hearing impairment.
  • The Getting Ready to Learn’s newly launched Parent Tab includes resources from the EA’s Sensory Service and a range of providers.  Resources have been included because they are aimed at the pre-school children.

In addition, we have provided links to a number of sites dedicated to helping young children who are deaf or having hearing problems in the UK today.
